Steps To Move Into Residential Aged Care
We know that the move into an aged care home can be a very emotional time. There are a number of steps that you need to take so that you can find the right home for you.
To help you with this transition, we have mapped out the steps and provided some helpful links below:
Step 1 – Starting the process
Knowing Your Options
Getting started begins with a call to My Aged Care (1800 200 422 or myagedcare.gov.au). They’ll collect your information and arrange your next steps.
ACAT Assessment
An Aged Care Assessment Team will visit you at home or in the hospital to evaluate your care needs, discuss available support and determine your eligibility for residential care and government assistance.
Step 2 – Find out what you’ll need to pay
Financial Assessment
Complete an Aged Care Calculation of Cost assessment with Services Australia (1800 227 475) to determine your fees and government support eligibility. To get an estimate of your aged care fees, you can visit the My Aged Care Fee Estimator.
Your Fee Letter
This will include the maximum basic daily care fee you can be asked to pay, plus any means tested care fee and accommodation contribution. Contact us if you need help understanding your letter.
Step 3 – Choosing Your New Home
Visit and Compare
We encourage you to tour several aged care homes. Visit Karingal Green to meet our team, see our facilities and get a feel for our community.
Making Your Choice
Once you’ve found your perfect match, we’ll help you complete the resident agreement covering your care, services, fees and rights.
Step 4 – Moving In
Your New Space
Bring personal items to make your room feel like home. We provide plenty of storage for your belongings and treasured possessions.
Setting In
Our team will take time to understand your interests and preferences, ensuring our care and activities match your lifestyle from day one.
Finding the right aged care home for you
Every aged care community will be slightly different, both in what it offers and the culture within it. It’s important to take a tour of the aged care homes you are considering before you sign your agreement.
The key things you should ask any aged care provider are:
- What type of accommodation is available?
- What types of care, services and activities are offered?
- How can the care and services be tailored to you?
- What additional services are offered?
- What are the costs of care and services?
- Is there a room available for me today or do I have to wait?
- How do they measure the quality of care and services they provide?
