How to make Karingal Green your home

Moving into aged care can be a stressful and sensitive time for all, however there are some ways you can make this transition a little easier. At Karingal Green, we treat each of our residents like family and want to make sure you or your loved one haven’t only chosen a new place to live, but a place to call home.

From selecting certain belongings to customising your room, here are some ways to make your space feel more homely and try to ease into this new way of life as easily as possible.

Book a tour of the home with the family before you move in

While you may have chosen Karingal Green due to location or recommendations and been impressed by images online or on our social media, we highly recommend you book a tour of our magnificent home. This way you can invite your family and those close to your loved one transitioning into aged care life, to discover all the ins and outs of Karingal Green. It’s a great way to gain a better understanding of the home, the layout, our facilities and the room your friend or family member will be moving into. Importantly, you will meet the team and be able to ask any questions or concerns you may have. This can really help everyone feel involved, while providing some reassurance and help you feel settled.

Make your surroundings familiar

Our well appointed rooms at Karingal Green have been thoughtfully designed to make the most of every space. From the ensuite bathroom to the large built in robes, you will be comfortable and feel at home in no time. However, to help with this transition, we encourage  you to bring your favourite personal belongings. From your bedding to photos or keepsakes you hold close to your heart, perhaps a favourite painting, a gift box from your partner or some photo frames which are non negotiable. We invite you to pack these and set them up as you wish, ensuring your space feels familiar and in your own environment.

Keep up your normal activities

One piece of advice we strongly suggest is to try and maintain your current routines. From your daily breakfast, to morning walks or exercise, these can all continue to be carried out in our home. If you usually have a hair appointment every fortnight, you can book into the Wellness Centre. If you catch up with a friend every Thursday over coffee, why not invite them to our Karingal Green Cafe? We have specific activities and structures in place so you can feel comfortable and settled as soon as possible, while sticking to a routine keeps your day-to-day familiar, helping with the transition.

Get involved

We understand how stressful and unnerving moving homes can be; one way we like to welcome new residents is to involve them in some of the array of activities we have on offer. Our schedule is ever changing, and there’s many opportunities throughout the week to meet other residents and become involved. Your weekly bingo can now be enjoyed alongside new friends, or a morning walk is a chance to chat with friendly faces while getting outdoors. If you’re not one to start conversations, there’s many events, happy hours, themed days and games you can attend.

As we are starting off a new year, this may be the time to consider making the move into aged care. We understand it can be daunting and stressful for all involved however our friendly and experienced team are here to help guide you through every step of the way. Supporting you to live a happy and healthy life with us here at Karingal Green.
