Summer is a season of warmth and sunshine, however it also brings unique challenges for our residents. Older adults are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses due to changes in how their bodies regulate temperature. At Karingal Green, we’re dedicated to promoting health and well-being all year round, especially during the warmer months.
Our Wellness Centre plays a vital role in keeping residents healthy by offering personalised care and fitness programs. Coupled with essential summer safety tips like hydration and sun protection, our approach ensures they stay safe, active, and comfortable all season long.
Why Summer Safety Matters
As we age, our ability to cool down naturally decreases due to reduced sweat production and slower circulation. Chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes can further heighten heat sensitivity, making seniors more prone to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
Older adults face increased health risks during heat waves due to reduced sweat production, slower circulation, and underlying health conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Staying cool and hydrated is essential for preventing serious complications and maintaining overall well-being.
Stay Hydrated
Water is key, drink plenty of water and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Seniors should aim for at least eight glasses of water daily. Refreshing beverages like herbal iced teas or water infused with fruits can make hydration enjoyable. Avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks, which can cause dehydration.
Protect Against the Sun
Sunscreen with SPF 30+ should be applied generously and reapplied every two hours when outdoors. Wearing breathable fabrics, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective sunglasses can block harmful rays. Try and schedule outdoor activities for early mornings or evenings to avoid peak heat hours.
