Foods for a long and healthy life

Eating well brings with it a raft of health benefits such as weight maintenance, increased energy and mental clarity, but did you know that there are certain foods proven to slow the aging process and perhaps even ward off age-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and osteoporosis.

Here are some antioxidant rich foods known to support longevity and lifelong health and vitality.

Olive oil
In moderation, olive oil is an antioxidant powerhouse for the body. Decades ago, studies concluded that the monounsaturated fats in olive oil were responsible for low rates of heart disease. Olive oil is also high in a powerful antioxidant, polyphenols, which may contribute to preventing other age-related diseases.

Fish
Fish is a rich source of omega-3 fats which help to prevent the build-up of cholesterol in arteries. Fish is also filled with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins such as D and B2, calcium, iron, zinc and iodine. It is the perfect addition to a healthy diet at least twice a week.

Chocolate
We all love a bit of chocolate and generally don’t require any convincing to include more in our diets but this well-loved sweet not only tastes great, but also boasts a range of health benefits. Darker chocolate varieties are usually rich in flavanols, which helps to preserve the healthy functioning of blood vessels. When blood vessels are functioning at their best, this can help to lower the risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia.

Yoghurt
Yoghurt is rich in calcium, which helps to maintain strong healthy bones and prevent against osteoporosis. Yoghurt also contains a host of good bacteria which is ideal for maintaining gut health and can help to diminish age-related intestinal illnesses.

Nuts
Rich sources of unsaturated fats, nuts offer similar health benefits to olive oil. They also have very concentrated sources of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
